Insight into the nuances of buying and selling in one of the country’s most complex urban markets.
The area on this page follows the DC tax office’s assessment neighborhood, clipped at North Capitol Street: North Capitol Street on the west, Florida Avenue NE on the south, Rhode Island Avenue NE on the north, and the Red Line tracks and rail yard on the east. New York Avenue cuts across the southern end. The rowhouse blocks fill the western and central sections, while Eckington Place, Harry Thomas Way and the streets near the tracks hold the newer condominium and apartment buildings, Alethia Tanner Park and the trail.
The Red Line is reachable at either end: NoMa-Gallaudet U just south of Florida Avenue and Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood off the northeast corner. The Metropolitan Branch Trail runs along the east edge and gives cyclists and walkers a car-free route to NoMa and Union Station. Drivers use North Capitol Street toward the Capitol, New York Avenue toward Route 50, and Rhode Island Avenue toward Northeast DC and Maryland.
Errands inside Eckington are modest: corner markets, a handful of restaurants and cafes, and the ground-floor retail at Eckington Yards on Eckington Place. For full grocery runs, pharmacies and a wider set of restaurants, NoMa is a short walk south and the Union Market district lies east across the tracks. The shopping center beside Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood station is another nearby option.
