Insight into the nuances of buying and selling in one of the country’s most complex urban markets.
The Patuxent River forms the city’s northern edge and the Howard County line. The city reaches west toward I-95, east along MD 198 toward the Anne Arundel County line and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and south past Laurel Lakes to the Contee Road area, with an irregular outline from annexations. US 1 runs north to south through the middle and carries most of the retail. Main Street and the oldest houses sit at the north end near the river and the MARC station, and the 1980s lake communities are on the south side.
Laurel station on MARC’s Camden Line gives weekday rail service to Washington Union Station and to Baltimore. Metrobus P12 links to Greenbelt station, and RTA buses serve Howard County. Drivers have US 1 in town, I-95 just west, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway to the east and MD 200 a short distance south for trips toward Montgomery County.
Everyday shopping is concentrated on US 1 at Towne Centre at Laurel, which has a supermarket and a cinema, and at the nearby Laurel Shopping Center. Main Street offers independent restaurants and shops within walking distance of the older blocks. The city operates its own parks, including Riverfront Park on the Patuxent and Granville Gude Park with its lakes and paths.
