Insight into the nuances of buying and selling in one of the country’s most complex urban markets.
This page follows the Burtonsville census-designated place. The Patuxent River and its reservoir form the northern edge at the Howard County line, the Prince George’s County line is the eastern edge, the area narrows to the south toward Fairland along U.S. 29, and the western side reaches toward Spencerville and Peach Orchard Road. U.S. 29 runs north to south and Route 198 crosses it at the commercial center, where the two shopping centers and the park-and-ride are. Old Columbia Pike parallels U.S. 29 past Burtonsville Elementary and Paint Branch High, and the townhome and detached communities branch off Route 198, Old Columbia Pike and Greencastle Road.
U.S. 29 is the main corridor, south to the Capital Beltway and Silver Spring and north to Columbia. Route 198 leads east to Interstate 95 and on to Laurel. The Intercounty Connector crosses U.S. 29 a few minutes south. From Burtonsville, the Flash Blue route and Metrobus M52 run to Silver Spring station.
Groceries, pharmacies, restaurants and services are concentrated in Burtonsville Crossing and Burtonsville Town Square at the main junction, so most errands are one stop. Larger shopping areas are in Laurel to the east and along U.S. 29 to the south. Burtonsville Elementary and Paint Branch High are on Old Columbia Pike, with Benjamin Banneker Middle close by.
