Reston is one of the country’s best-known planned communities, founded in 1964 by Robert E. Simon, whose initials give the town its name. It was designed around village centers, lakes, and open space, starting with Lake Anne Village Center, and today covers much of the area between the Dulles Toll Road corridor and Route 7 in western Fairfax County.
Housing includes townhouses and cluster homes, garden and high-rise condominiums, and single-family homes, spread across neighborhoods tied together by a network of paths. Newer high-rise condos and apartments have been added around the Metro stations and Reston Town Center.
Daily life revolves around the village centers and Reston Town Center, with restaurants, shops, a skating pavilion, and events. Reston Association maintains lakes, pools, tennis courts, and an extensive trail system, and the W&OD Trail runs through the community.
The Silver Line serves Reston at Wiehle-Reston East, Reston Town Center, and Herndon stations, and the Dulles Toll Road and Fairfax County Parkway connect to Tysons, Dulles, and DC.
Reston offers planned-community amenities, trails, and lakes with a wide range of housing and Silver Line access.
