Potomac Yard takes its name from the freight switching yard that opened here in 1906 and was decommissioned in 1989. After an environmental cleanup, the land was rebuilt in stages. The area mapped on this page is approximate. It is drawn around recent sales labeled Potomac Yard and Potomac Greens in the City of Alexandria, runs from the Braddock Road area north toward the Metro station, and also takes in Old Town Greens and a few addresses on the Del Ray side of Richmond Highway. The Arlington portion of Potomac Yard and the big-box shopping center to the north are outside it.
Housing is recent. Most homes that sold in the past 12 months were built in the 2000s, 2010s or 2020s, and about four in five were townhouses. Condominiums make up most of the rest. Across about 65 sales the median price was roughly $1,170,000, with townhouses at a median near $1,212,000 and condominiums near $1,012,500.
Potomac Yard Park, a 24-acre linear park that opened in 2013, runs along the rail line with playgrounds, sports fields and a fountain. Potomac Greens sits east of the tracks, toward the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Potomac Yard Center, a large shopping center anchored by big-box stores, is north of the Metro station, beyond the mapped area, and Del Ray’s Mount Vernon Avenue is a few blocks west.
The Potomac Yard station on the Blue and Yellow lines opened in May 2023 at the north end of the neighborhood, just beyond the outline used here, with entrances on Potomac Avenue and on Potomac Greens Drive. Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus opened its first academic building next to the station in 2025. Braddock Road station is just past the south end. Metroway bus rapid transit runs in dedicated lanes along Richmond Highway toward Crystal City, and Virginia Railway Express and freight trains pass on the tracks beside the park.
I’m glad to walk you through the differences between the townhouse sections, the condominium buildings and the blocks nearest each station.
