Herndon is an incorporated town of about 4.3 square miles in western Fairfax County, just north of the Dulles Toll Road between Reston and Dulles International Airport. Founded in 1858 and named for naval commander William Lewis Herndon, it grew from a railroad stop into a town of about 25,000 residents while keeping a traditional downtown at its center.
Most of Herndon’s housing was built from the 1970s through the 1990s, in neighborhoods of detached houses and townhouse communities, with condominiums scattered through town. A wave of new townhouse and single-family construction in the 2020s has added newer options, and a few older homes survive near the historic downtown.
Downtown Herndon, along Elden and Station Streets, has restaurants, shops, the Herndon Depot Museum in the former train station, and the Washington & Old Dominion Trail running straight through it on the old railroad bed. The town is known for its parks — every residence is within a mile of one — including Runnymede Park and the Herndon Centennial Golf Course, and the annual Herndon Festival draws crowds downtown.
The Silver Line’s extension opened in 2022, putting Herndon station at the town’s southern edge with direct service to Reston, Tysons, and downtown DC. Route 28 and the Dulles Toll Road connect quickly to Dulles Airport and the region’s employment centers.
I enjoy showing Herndon because it offers a real small-town downtown, trail access, and Metro service, with a wide range of townhouse and single-family options.
