Shepherd Park sits on the northern edge of Washington DC, between 16th Street and Georgia Avenue, with Eastern Avenue and Silver Spring, Maryland on its north side. The neighborhood took its name in 1926 from Alexander Robey Shepherd, the territorial governor whose estate once stood here. This page follows the DC tax office’s assessment neighborhood, which extends south to Aspen Street and so includes The Parks at Walter Reed, the redevelopment of the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center campus that many sources treat as the neighborhood’s southern edge.
The older blocks are almost entirely detached houses. Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival houses sit beside bungalows, a number of mail-order kit houses and some mid-century ramblers. Most of the east-west streets carry the names of flowers, shrubs and trees, such as Geranium, Holly, Jonquil and Kalmia. At the south end, The Parks at Walter Reed adds a different product entirely: condominium and apartment buildings completed in 2023 on a 66-acre site that also reuses historic campus buildings.
Georgia Avenue is the commercial corridor for the neighborhood. The marketplace at The Parks at Walter Reed, anchored by a Whole Foods Market completed in 2023, is the main grocery stop, and smaller shops and restaurants line Georgia Avenue north toward the Maryland line. The Juanita E. Thornton/Shepherd Park Neighborhood Library is on Georgia Avenue, and Rock Creek Park is within walking distance to the west of 16th Street.
There is no Metrorail station inside Shepherd Park. Takoma and Silver Spring stations, both on the Red Line, are each roughly a mile from the middle of the neighborhood, closer from the eastern and northern blocks, and Metrobus service runs on Georgia Avenue and 16th Street. Drivers use 16th Street or Georgia Avenue to reach downtown DC and downtown Silver Spring, with the Capital Beltway a short drive north.
I’m glad to help you compare a detached house on the older blocks with a new condominium at The Parks at Walter Reed.
