Celebrating Black History Month Around the DMV

Ways to honor Black History Month in the DC area, from the National Museum of African American History and Culture to Black-owned restaurants, bookstores and shops worth supporting all year.

Black History Month is a chance to honor the rich legacy of African American contributions in the Washington, DC area, especially in business and entrepreneurship. From cultural events to Black-owned businesses that shape our communities, there are countless ways to show support this month and all year.

Black History Month events

Each February, the DC area fills with events celebrating Black history and culture. A few to look for:

National Museum of African American History and Culture: The NMAAHC hosts performances, talks and family programs throughout February.
ASALH Black History Month Luncheon: The Association for the Study of African American Life and History, founded by Carter G. Woodson, holds its annual luncheon in DC around the national Black History Month theme.
Local libraries: Libraries across DC, Maryland and Virginia run story times, author events and kids’ activities all month.
