Parkfairfax sits in the northwest corner of the City of Alexandria, near the Arlington County line. The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company built it in 1941 and 1942 as rental housing for workers near the new Pentagon, and it was renovated and sold as condominiums between 1977 and 1979. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The area mapped on this page is approximate: it is drawn around recent sales labeled Parkfairfax, and it also takes in Parc East, a separate multi-story condominium building on Martha Custis Drive, plus a few houses at its edges.
The community holds 1,684 homes in more than 200 Colonial Revival brick buildings spread across 132 acres. There are no high-rises inside Parkfairfax itself. Homes are one-level apartments and two-level townhouse-style units, and every one of them is a condominium, although the MLS records many as townhouses. Over the past 12 months the median sale price across the area was about $367,500. Townhouse-style units had a median near $397,000 and apartment-style units near $320,000.
The grounds are the main feature. Buildings sit back from Martha Custis Drive, Gunston Road and Valley Drive behind lawns and old trees, and footpaths cut between the courts. Shirlington, just across I-395 in Arlington, has restaurants, shops, live theater and a cinema, and is reached by a pedestrian walkway over the interchange. The Washington and Old Dominion Trail starts there as well. Larger grocery and errand trips usually mean a short drive to nearby shopping centers.
There is no Metrorail station in Parkfairfax. Buses run on the main streets, and I-395 is at the edge of the community, which puts the Pentagon and downtown Washington DC a direct drive north. Quaker Lane and West Glebe Road carry local traffic toward the rest of Alexandria and Arlington. Parking is in open lots and along the streets.
I’m glad to walk you through the different floor plans, the condominium fees and what recent sales say about each unit type.
