Alexandria is an independent city on the Potomac, just south of Arlington and across the river from DC. Founded in 1749, it combines the historic streets of Old Town with inland neighborhoods such as Del Ray, Rosemont, Parkfairfax, and Seminary Hill, and newer development at Potomac Yard and Carlyle.
Housing is varied: 18th- and 19th-century rowhouses and townhouses in Old Town, early-1900s bungalows and foursquares in Del Ray and Rosemont, garden-style condominiums and mid-century homes inland, single-family neighborhoods in the West End and Seminary Hill, and newer condos and townhouses near Metro.
The Potomac waterfront, King Street’s shops and restaurants, the Torpedo Factory Art Center, and Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray are major draws, and parks and trails, including the Mount Vernon Trail, run along the river.
Alexandria is served by the Blue and Yellow Lines at King Street–Old Town, Braddock Road, Potomac Yard, and several other stations, plus VRE and Amtrak at King Street. Reagan National Airport and DC are minutes away.
Alexandria offers historic neighborhoods, a waterfront, and a wide range of housing with strong transit connections.
