Wesley Heights occupies high ground in Northwest DC just south of Ward Circle, where Massachusetts and Nebraska Avenues meet beside American University. On this page the area runs from the circle south between Foxhall Road on the west and Glover-Archbold Park on the east. Much of the neighborhood was developed in the 1920s by the brothers William C. and Allison N. Miller as an early master-planned community, and a zoning overlay approved in 1992 governs the scale of houses and additions on many of the original streets.
The housing falls into three groups that were close to evenly split in the past 12 months: 14 detached houses, 11 townhouses and 10 condominium apartments out of 35 sales. The detached houses sit on wooded interior lots, many from the 1920s and 1930s, with later and rebuilt houses mixed in. Westover Place is a cluster of brick, Federal-style townhouses built around 1979 to 1984, and smaller attached sections carry the Sutton Place and Embassy Park labels in sales records. The condominium apartments are in a few buildings near Massachusetts Avenue, including 4200 Massachusetts Avenue, which recorded four sales.
Everyday retail is on New Mexico Avenue, where Wagshal’s specialty market and the restaurant Chef Geoff’s share a small commercial block at 3201 New Mexico Avenue. Larger grocery stores are a short drive east on Wisconsin Avenue. Glover-Archbold Park and its trail run along the eastern side, and Battery Kemble Park lies just west of Foxhall Road. The large apartment buildings on Cathedral Avenue, including The Towers, sit just east of the area.
There is no Metrorail station in Wesley Heights. Tenleytown-AU on the Red Line is more than a mile north, and The D96 bus runs on Massachusetts Avenue toward Dupont Circle and Bethesda, and the D90 runs on New Mexico and Nebraska Avenues between Tenleytown and downtown. Most trips to downtown are by car or bus along Massachusetts Avenue, and many detached houses have a driveway or garage.
I’m glad to explain how the house, townhouse and condominium markets in Wesley Heights differ and to share what is selling in each.
