Mount Pleasant is a compact Northwest DC neighborhood tucked against Rock Creek Park, bounded by the park on the west and north, 16th Street on the east, and Harvard Street on the south. It feels removed from the city’s bustle even though Columbia Heights and Adams Morgan are just across its edges.
Most of the housing dates from about 1900 to 1930, and the neighborhood has been a DC historic district since 1987. The western blocks, on streets such as Park Road, Newton, Kenyon, Lamont, and Irving, are lined with brick rowhouses with front porches, while mid-rise apartment and condominium buildings stand along 16th Street and Mount Pleasant Street. The 1800 block of Park Road adds a rare row of detached houses set on terraces.
Mount Pleasant Street is the neighborhood’s main street, with a hardware store, grocers, cafes, bakeries, and restaurants. The Mount Pleasant Library, built in 1925 with support from Andrew Carnegie, anchors the southern end of 16th Street. Rock Creek Park’s trails are at the end of many blocks, and the National Zoo is a short walk across the park.
Columbia Heights station on the Green and Yellow Lines is about a ten- to fifteen-minute walk from most homes, and buses run along 16th Street and Mount Pleasant Street toward downtown.
I enjoy showing Mount Pleasant because it offers intact early-1900s rowhouses and a real main street, with Rock Creek Park as a backyard.
