Washington, DC is known for its monuments and museums, but it also offers residents and visitors some beautiful hiking trails, right in the middle of the city. Soapstone Valley Trail is one of our favorites.
- Length: about 1.2 miles one way
- Difficulty: easy to moderate; the trail crosses the creek several times on stepping stones
- Getting there: about two blocks from the Van Ness-UDC Metro station (Red Line)
Start with a stop at Bread Furst
Before you hit the trail, grab a coffee and something sweet at Bread Furst on Connecticut Avenue. It’s much more than a coffee shop: along with excellent pastries and bread, the shelves are stocked with specialty items like jams, pickles, cheeses and fresh juices. It’s worth a visit before or after your hike.
Parking and the trailhead
If you’re driving, Albemarle Street NW usually has plenty of street parking near the trail entrance. From there, the trail starts with a downhill slope that brings you down to the creek. The route is marked with yellow blazes on the trees, so it’s easy to follow.
